Ref the discussion of Amazon forest fires. I was recently in Brazil on a business trip (not Amazon area) and the word I got from folks down there is that basically these fires happen almost every year at this time of year. Maybe this year is slightly worse, but is getting the media attention here and there because it was politically driven. I don’t recall the actual motive, but has to do with the current Brazil president’s stance on things. (may not be 100% factual, but is what was the attitude towards it down there)

I’m sure you are right. Most of my contacts down there don’t view it as anything out of the ordinary and are surprised that it is getting any attention at all. The fact is fire is a good thing for forests and part of the natural order of things.
