Featured Species: Hickory
Carya spp. is the best way to refer to Hickory because there are quite a few species that get sold under the Hickory name: Shagbark, Shellbark, Pignut, Mockernut, etc. Basically they all look similar and will work about the same. That is they are hard and VERY strong. They can be prone to tearout but they are not as terrible as most people make them out to be. Working with green Hickory of course is a dream and the species is fantacstic for steam bending and chair making.
In today's market Hickory is mostly used for flooring due to its exceptional hardness and for the fact that the smaller tree only yields narrow and short boards perfect for flooring. But the real calling for Hickor is as tool handles. Specifically dynamic tool handles like axes and hammers.
