Episode 8: Old Stud vs New Stud

07.15.2019 by shannon // 2 Comments

Softwood Forestry Management

In this episode I talk about genetically modified Chestnut, Red Oak sizes, Whitewood, the difference between hardwood and softwood, and old studs vs new studs.  The theme really is softwoods and how those resources are managed very differently from our hardwood forests.

Thanks to everyone who wrote in with questions and feedback, you make the show great.

On the American Chestnut. I’ve always had an interest in the tree. I can find places online that sell seedlings for am amount that isn’t absurd. Is it harmful or counter productive to buy and plant the seedlings even though i live in a location that is outside the natural range for the tree? Would it be harmful? I live in southern MN or zone 4 and have soil characteristics that are listed as favorable to the tree.

I’m no botanist but I can’t see that it would do any harm. The worst that could happen is the tree won’t be viable. The Chestnut itself isn’t dangerous but it’s susceptibility to bugs is what is the problem. Still single instance plantings shouldn’t pose a major issue. But to be sure, reach out to a local arborist and get their opinion.
