The featured lumber species today is Catalpa. A very oak like tree but with a really soft workability. High quality, clear lumber that is easy to work and comes in decent widths and lengths. Why doesn't this wood more popular? Also on the show, Tree of Heaven as lumber and the engineered wood products world of PSL, LSL, and LVL.

Featured Species: Catalpa
Catalpa speciosa or Northern Catalpa is a large tree found across North America and mostly in the Midwest and Eastern US states. Other species within the genus are found across Europe as well. Differences between the species are minimal enough as to be grouped together as a single species when it comes to wood working.
Similar in appearance to Ash with a darker grey green cast and similar ring porous structure. The hardness is quite low when compared to Oak and Ash at 520 and makes it work much like Butternut or Basswood and is prized by woodcarvers.
Truly an under appreciated species and I highly urge you to find some and try it in a project.
