An FSC Alternative to Many Tropical woods
Monkeypod is a great timber coming out of Costa Rica that is almost entirely FSC. It is often sold as wider slabs due to the lighter weight and the way it is sawn in the jungle. A great alternative to many of the tropical species out there like Koa and Blackwood or even some of the fancy Rosewoods.
A fast growing tree that yields 3-5 foot wide slabs without the ridiculously hard grain of the typical tropical wood. Monkeypod is making waves in appearance and sustainability.

Albizia saman (or Samanea saman) or Monkeypod is an emerging species coming out of plantations around the globe. Native to Central America but planted across the globe now. This has that tropical look to it with a variety of colors and stripes but has a density similar to many temperate woods. The tree grows very fast, accounting for the lower density, and can produce wide slabs in excess of 4 feet wide. In Hawaii it grows next to the Koa trees and is quickly becoming a wood choice for Ukeulele makers to take some pressure off of Koa. Nearly 100% of the Monkeypod on the market is coming out of FSC forests. This is a great example of a species that is being managed in natural and plantation land to great effect.
