151 – Plantation vs Natural Forests

The Role of Plantation Forestry

Lots of talk about plantation forests.  Specifically the word "plantation" gets thrown in front of many popular lumber species.  Plantation Teak, Mahogany, Spanish Cedar, etc, etc.  But what exactly is a plantation and why.  Moreover if a forest is not a plantation then what do we call it?  I suggest we call it a Natural Forest.

In this episode I define plantations and natural forests and talk about what we can expects from the lumber coming from plantations. Also how plantations can evolve into natural forests. Ultimately why do we need plantations and why do we need natural forests. Also answer some questions about air drying and dealing with bugs as well as drying large timbers.
