141 – Persimmon

North American Ebony

Today I highlight Persimmon wood.  Not the Persimmon fruit.  Though it is important to note that the fruit comes from the Chinese Persimmon and the Common Persimmon produce tiny fruits that aren't particularly edible.  Not a prime lumber producer but unique in its hardness and dense nature.

This episode also delves into some great questions from you about decking material options, CITES and Bubinga, and Boxwood

Lumber Industry News

  • US Army Built a CLT modular structure able to withstand a 1 in 250 year earthquake.
  • Lignosat is in orbit and it was built using blind dovetails.

Listener Questions

  • Chris asks about Boxwood and how to get it.
  • Michael is going to rebuild his deck and asks about the materials out there he should consider and what the lifespans are for each
  • Stephen wonders why Bubinga is so available despite its CITES listing.
  • Evie asks who my favorite guest on the show was.

Featured Species: Persimmon

Diospyros virginiana

AKA North American Ebony because Persimmon is actually not just in the same family but same genus as the African Ebony so popular for the jet black color.  Persimmon is sold both for heart and sapwood.  The heart is a near dead ringer for Ziracote while the sap is a caramel, creamy brown.  Extremely hard and dense it is used in place where durability is key.  Gold club heads, industrial spools, boxing on moulding planes, etc.

    Hello,

If you are looking for boxwood, it is available from:
    https://store.octopus.com.tr
The shipping cost would probably be expensive.

If you follow Huw Crompton on FB, you can see what boxwood he harvests and sells periodically. I believe that most is sold to instrument makers.
